‘I can’t let this go.’
The air was warm out on the balcony. North sat on a sun lounger with her legs curled up beneath her, head lowered to stare at the iPad she was holding. She kept furiously scrolling through Spencer Daniels’ Twitter feed.
‘I think you have to.’ Elijah was leaning against the balcony railing looking out to sea. ‘Cassie isn’t going to say anything else and I doubt the rest of the crew will be any more talkative.’
‘He knows something,’ North angrily jabbed a finger against Spencer Daniels’ smarmy smile which beamed up at her from her tablet. ‘I know he does.’
‘Cassie seemed genuinely scared of him. We need to let this go.’
‘I thought she was just scared of losing her job,’ North looked up to squint at the railing, at Elijah silhouetted against the sun. ‘You changing your tune?’
‘I’m just concerned.’ With a slump of his shoulders, he turned to face her. ‘Concerned about you. Last night—’
‘I have night terrors,’ North stared at her iPad, clutching it with unnecessary force. Her nightmares had followed her out to Monaco. Would they haunt her to the ends of the earth? She’d always assumed that at some point she’d outrun them.
‘I’m not trying to—’
‘I need one more shot at him,’ she held up the iPad which had focused in on a flattering image of Spencer. He was smiling as he raised a glass of champagne, dressed head to toe in white like a saint. ‘Let me ask him again about Kelly. I’ll be more direct this time. I’ll be able to tell if he’s holding something back.’
‘North—’
‘One more shot. That’s it. Then we’re done, we can go home and I’ll stop fixating on Kelly’s missing summer. Okay?’
Elijah sighed but nodded his head. ‘Okay.’

She’d been ordered to sleep. Elijah had gone out to get lunch and left North with strict instructions to stay in bed and try to nap.
‘You need to rest,’ he told her before slipping out through the door.
On her back, North pressed her spine against the firm mattress of the bed and examined the painted ceiling of the hotel room. Sleep would not come. She wouldn’t let it. She felt it grab at her ankles, try to work its way up her body, making all her muscles feel warm and comfortable. Just when sleep had her in its grip she flung herself onto her side, forcing her eyes wide.
This went on for over an hour. North was sat up and staring at the television when the door opened and Elijah returned. He looked flustered.
‘Are you okay?’ she asked as he placed some store-bought sandwiches down on the sideboard.
‘I’m…’ He ran his hands through his hair, chewing his lip.
‘Elijah?’
‘You wanted one more shot at Spencer Daniels?’
‘Yes,’ North agreed slowly.
Elijah clicked his fingers. ‘You got it.’
‘What are you talking about?’
‘That dress, your black lace one, you can wear that but not with your Converse.’ He hurried over to the wardrobe, swept along in the tornado of his own harassed thoughts.
‘Elijah!’
‘Oh.’ With one hand on her dress, he looked over his shoulder at her.
